PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher will facilitate the development of skills of students with special needs, enabling them to safely and successfully participate in team, individual, and life sports with a minimum amount of support.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

Adapted PE Services

  1. Plan and provide adapted physical education services consistent with adapted PE goals contained in student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  2. Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of adapted PE services.
  3. Develop activity modifications and /or alternative activities for individual students; provide equipment needed to execute these modifications or alternative activities.
  4. Collaborate with regular physical education teachers to ensure student success through use of modifications and program planning.
  5. Provide regular physical education teachers with updated medical information and restrictions as needed, and address mobility and safety issues within the PE setting.
  6. Consult with educational staff to ensure modifications are being provided appropriately.
  7. Provide staff development training in assigned school(s) to assist personnel with implementation of curriculum modifications, as needed.

Assessment

  1. Assess students with disabilities to determine eligibility for Adapted PE services.
  2. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.

Student Management

  1. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the students.
  2. Provide structure and establish control of student behavior to effectively implement IEP goals and objectives.

Program Management

  1. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the Adapted Physical Education program, and implement changes based on the findings.
  2. Assist in the selection of equipment and materials needed for students/program.

Special Olympics

  1. Organize Special Olympics training sessions/practices.
  2. Lead Special Olympics training sessions/practices across the district.
  3. Manage athletes at training sites and ensure safety.
  4. Assist with planning and holding Special Olympics events such as end of year banquet, field day, presentations, etc.
  5. Manage Special Olympics budget through DSISD and SOTX.

Administration

  1. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documentation required according to mandated federal timelines and district policy.
  2. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.

Other

  1. Maintain confidentiality regarding student and coworker information and as required by FERPA.
  2. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  3. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  4. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  5. Attend and participate in departmental meetings.
  6. Transport Adapted PE equipment to various campuses as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise paraprofessionals when they are assisting students who receive AEP services, and guide Special Olympics volunteers as needed.

 

MENTAL DEMANDS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS / ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Equipment Used: Basic office equipment, including computers, copy machines, printers, telephones, scanners, and software for word processing and databases. Adapted PE equipment.

Posture: Frequent standing, stooping, bending and kneeling.

Motion: Frequent walking, pushing, and pulling.

Lifting: Frequent moderate lifting - move classroom or adaptive equipment; Occasional heavy lifting - may be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchairs, and position students with physical disabilities.

Environment: Regular travel district-wide to multiple work locations, as assigned – must be able to provide own transportation for in-district travel during work hours. Work inside and outside.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
